Think AI can replace your receptionist? Watch this first

Replacing a receptionist involves more than adding a chatbot: integrations, judgement and human interactions all need to be considered and designed explicitly.

Video summary

This short challenges the assumption that an AI system can simply replace a receptionist. The speaker says a receptionist’s work includes many small tasks, connections across platforms and forms of human judgement that are often handled instinctively.

To automate the role, those tasks would need to be identified and designed, with APIs and integrations put in place. The message is that replacing a job title is not the same as reproducing the full work behind it, and the implementation effort can be substantial.

Sometimes people say to me, "Oh, I want to use AI to replace this person." Let's use an example, a receptionist. I want to use AI to replace that person. Well, AI is not people. If you actually analyze what that receptionist does, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of things. There are integrations across multiple different platforms. Many, many aspects of their role are handled by a human instinctively, which all would need to be coded up. The APIs need to be set up. There's an enormous amount of work to get all of that to work just so you can hand it over to AI. It's not as easy. People are not AI.
