Liquid Death: The Craziest Brand Marketing Strategy Ever? #shorts

This short traces how a punk-rock festival inspired Liquid Death's unconventional approach to branding canned water.

Video summary

This short recounts an origin story behind Liquid Death’s unconventional name and visual identity. According to the speaker, founder Mike Cessario saw people backstage at the Vans Warped Tour drinking water from cans that could be mistaken for energy drinks.

That observation led to the idea of positioning canned water in a more extreme, punk-inspired way, with the name Liquid Death. The clip uses the story to show how a brand can find an unexpected cultural association; it is a retelling of the speaker’s account rather than an independently verified history.

Mike Cessario, the founder, came up with the idea of, "Okay, well, what's the craziest thing that we can call this?" Liquid Death popped up, and they ran with it. The original story is that he was at Vans Warped Tour, a punk rock festival. People backstage were pouring out cans of Monster. It was 35°, super hot. All the artists were basically pouring out these energy drinks that they weren't going to take one after another of during the day, and were using water instead—still water, like tap water.

So they thought, "Okay, if all these musicians and artists are taking it on stage, and people think it's Monster, then there could be something in this." And then years later, that sort of was, I guess, the birth of Liquid Death, or the idea behind it.
